O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. She made it into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement in her performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced significant defeats during the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and bottom two, respectively. Judges were shocked by the results and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil's performance was always top-quality that he never fell into the top 3. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September, 2005 finals. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
